Unity Church Universal – Unity’s Historic Landmark, by Rev. Carole Lunde
“I can still envision Myrtle tugging on the back of Charles’ jacket when she thought he was talking too long.”
On a snowy day in 1982, Rev. Greg Neteler reopened the historic building. His first church service was a Candle Lighting Service held on the evening of December 22, 1982. Many have attended that very special service over the last 40 years. For the service, the sanctuary is lit with candles placed high on the Tiffany windowsills and Christmas trees on the platform. The service is filled with wonderful music and Greg’s deep and enlightening interpretation of the story. In 1906 the Tracy Avenue Unity Church Universal was built and dedicated by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore as Unity’s first home. It housed worship services, classes, Silent Unity, administration, and publishing. Charles Fillmore said the building is “the property of Unity people everywhere.” Rev. Greg is dedicated to the study of Principles taught by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore and the preservation of this precious property. Preservation of a century-old building becomes more challenging as time goes on, but the ambiance and feeling of the Fillmores’ consciousness are still strong and inspiring there. The Principles that Rev. Greg adheres to and teaches are always fresh, relevant, and grounded in Spiritual Truth. I am Rev. Carole Lunde and it has been an honor to serve with Rev. Greg since 1983 when I was living in town between my church assignments. It is a thrill to stand on that platform and behind the pulpit where the Fillmores stood so long ago. I can still envision Myrtle tugging on the back of Charles’ jacket when she thought he was talking too long. If you would like a tour of 913 Tracy, call Rev. Greg at 816-421-6446 and he will be happy to accommodate you.
